Veteran's Day Guest

Ms. Hughes's 2nd grade class had a special guest reader on Veteran's Day. Kelly's dad is serving in the military in Afghanistan. Our media specialist, Mrs. Catalano, made great efforts to arrange a Skype call with him, but when the time arrived, the connection in Afghanistan wasn't working. A substitute plan was quickly crafted, and Ms. Hughes held up the book as he read it over a cell phone. We used a microphone to enhance the sound, and it was a meaningful experience for both the students and adults in the room. WLTX aired a great news story about the event. The video is evidently too large to embed here, but you may view it here: Veteran's Day

Graphing Science Experiment Data

Mrs. Williamson and Mrs. Mills' classes designed and carried out experiments during their Forces and Motion unit. The students went through the entire Scientific Process trying to figure out what variables would change the distance their airplanes traveled along their flight line. They learned about controlled, dependent and independent variables. To enable the students to analyze their data that they collected, they graphed their data using an online website, Create a Graph. What a great way to integrate math and science! Check out these student graphs and the website they used.

2nd Grade Research

Second grade students have been studying features of nonfiction text and have been researching animals. After researching, Mrs. Studley's students have been using Publisher to create a book about their animal. Some of the nonfiction text features they are including are title page, table of contents, sub-headings, glossary, and index. Mrs. Foxworth used Myebook to convert one of these projects into a digital book. You will enjoy this book about hummingbirds by Jordan.

Interactive Story

Students in Mrs. K. Hughes class have been working hard at developing their writing skills. They recently completed a class writing project to create an interactive "Choose Your Own Adventure" online story. The class brainstormed/planned the story using Open Mind 2 and wrote the text for the beginning of the story together as a group. Then they planned an outline of how the story would progress. Students worked in pairs to write the story parts for the remaining mind map branches. Each pair then created a PowerPoint slide of their part of the story, and these were hyperlinked together. Then iSpring was used to convert the PPT into html.
Here's a picture of the planning mind map:

Thinking about Mothers

What is your favorite thing about your mother? What does your mother do when you are away at school? If you could give your mother anything in the whole world, what would you give her? What makes your mom smile really big? What have you learned from your mother?

These questions have been answered by the students in Mrs. Miller's first grade class. Listen to these short podcasts of students talking about their mothers. Just for fun, Mrs. Foxworth went home and asked her 18 year old son the same questions. She was curious about how the answers of a student who had finished his first year of college would compare with the answers of students who have almost finished first grade. His podcast (reluctantly recorded, I might add) is at the end.

Biography Presentations

All 2nd grade students did a genre study of biographies. Each student read a biography and prepared a presentation about their famous person. The students used Open Mind 2 to organize their information and then exported the mind map to a PowerPoint. After they fine-tuned their PowerPoints, they did oral presentations to share what they had learned. Mrs. Rogers's students also did a video to insert at the end of the presentation. Standing in front of a picture of their book cover, they shared their opinion about whether or not the world would have been different if this person had not been born and whether or not they would like to be this person. Here's a great example from Emily Hane.

Author's Circle

Students in Mrs. Williamson's class just finished a great writing project with Ms. Clark, Mrs. Williamson's intern. First they read the poem, "Where I'm From," by George Ella Lyon. You can read the original poem here. Then students used that model to create their own "Where I'm From" poems. After the poems were written, the students shared the poems orally during Author's Circle presentations and celebrated with snacks. Here are a few:

All 4th grade students just completed research projects. Each student selected an important person in American history and researched that person's life and accomplishments. The time periods were Revolutionary War, Explorers, and Civil War.Some classes used Open Mind 2 software to organize their research. Here's an example. Each branch as an attached text file that contains the details of the research.

After the research was completed, students had to prepare a presentation. They had multiple options for method of presentation including creating a PowerPoint, a poster, a song, a rap, or a even a comic book. Here is a rehearsal for a song about Francis Marion:

Water Cycle Song

The KinderBears from Mrs. Dyches's class have been learning about water. They sent a letter to Mr. Rich's 4th grade students asking the question, "Where does water come from?"

Mr. Rich's students prepared posters to explain the water cycle. Then they visited the KinderBears to teach them about water.

After teaching the lesson, students from Mr. Rich's and Mrs. Szalwinski's classes taught the KinderBears the "Water Cycle Song" to help them remember what they had learned.

4th Grade Field Trip

The 4th grade had a fabulous field trip to Charleston on Wednesday. Students enjoyed the boat ride out to Fort Sumter. They learned a lot about the beginning of the Civil War as they toured Fort Sumter. Later in the day they traveled to Fort Moultrie and spent time learning about the Revolutionary War. This video is a compilation of pictures taken by Mr. Rich and podcast interviews recorded by Mrs. Brown. The student voices don't necessarily correspond with the pictures in order, but you will enjoy hearing what some of the students learned during their trip!
